The Complete Kilimanjaro Climbing Guide
Routes, preparation, costs, and what to expect on Africa's highest peak.
Mount Kilimanjaro stands at 5,895 meters and attracts over 50,000 climbers annually. Here's everything you need to know.
Choosing Your Route
The Machame Route (7 days) is most popular for its scenery. Lemosho (8 days) offers the best acclimatization. Marangu (5-6 days) is the only route with hut accommodation.
Physical Preparation
Start training 2-3 months before. Focus on cardio and hiking with a weighted pack. Kilimanjaro is a trek, not a technical climb.
Altitude Sickness
Choose a longer route for better acclimatization. Stay hydrated, walk slowly ("pole pole"), and communicate any symptoms to your guide immediately.
What to Pack
Layering is key. You'll experience temperatures from 30°C at the base to -20°C at the summit. Quality waterproof gear is essential.
