10 Essential Safari Tips for First-Time Visitors to Tanzania
Everything you need to know before your first African safari adventure.
Planning your first safari in Tanzania is exciting but can feel overwhelming. Here are our top tips from over a decade of guiding experience.
1. Choose the Right Season
The dry season (June-October) offers the best wildlife viewing as animals gather around water sources. The wet season brings lush landscapes and newborn animals.
2. Pack Smart
Neutral-colored clothing, a good hat, sunscreen, and binoculars are essentials. Most lodges offer laundry service, so pack light.
3. Respect Wildlife
Always listen to your guide. Never stand up in the vehicle or make loud noises near animals.
4. Bring the Right Camera
A zoom lens (200-400mm) is ideal for wildlife photography. Don't forget extra batteries and memory cards.
5. Tipping Guidelines
Tipping is customary in Tanzania. Budget $10-15 per day for your guide and $5-10 for camp staff.
